Applications for the Gilman International Scholarship Program open mid-January and close March 2025.
The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program (Gilman Program) enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with opportunities to gain proficiency in diverse languages and cultures, skills that are critically important to academic and career development. The March 2025 Deadline application will open mid-January 2025 for applications whose abroad program or internships start between May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026.

Compensation:
- Awards of up to $5,000 are made for up to one academic year of undergraduate study abroad. Award amounts will vary.
- Students studying a critical need language while abroad may apply for an additional supplemental Critical Need Language Award (CNLA) of up to $3,000.
- Students conducting STEM-related research as part of their international program may apply for an additional STEM Supplemental Award of up to $1,000.
Qualifications:
- First time recipient, participants can only receive the scholarship once.
- A citizen or national of the United States.
- Undergraduate student, in good standing, at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States (both two-year and four-year institutions).
- Current recipient of Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship.
- In the process of applying to, or accepted to, a credit-bearing study abroad or internship program. Programs must be in a country or location with an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, according to the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory System.
Deadlines:
- Student Application deadline: Thursday, March 6, 2025 at 11:59pm Pacific Time (PT)
- Advisor Certification deadline: Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 11:59pm Pacific Time (PT)
