Pursuing a Career in Public Relations
YE4C’s first editorial board was in place from February to June 2020. The group was made up of 10 young people from around the country. They helped organize and improve content for the YE4C website. They also created content for YE4C and gave feedback to federal agencies. We invited each editorial board member to reflect on their time with the editorial board and to tell us more about themselves and their hopes for the future.
Today’s Inspiring Story follows Lauren Dawkins. She is a 20-year-old junior from Washington D.C. She is a Business Communication major and hopes to become a Public Relations Specialist.
What made you interested in working on the YE4C Editorial Board?
Writing has always been interesting to me and is an important part of my major. Specifically, I have been interested in helping individuals my age through writing. It is not only important to get information out to youth but to also look at how this information is released. If it is not done right, it won’t be effective. I wanted to be able to contribute in any way possible to prevent that. I also wanted to expand my writing abilities and learn more about the topics going on today. Combining these two interests made me want to learn more about the role and apply for it.
What is your favorite thing about the YE4C Editorial Board?
So, I assist in reviewing various projects that YE4C is involved in. Throughout my time on the Editorial Board, my favorite part has been talking about issues facing teens during the quarantine and writing content about it. I loved was that I was able to help create content for other young people. The information is for other young people and it is being relayed by individuals who understand the audience more than adults do.
What are your long-term career goals?
I want to become a Public Relations Specialist and represent individuals in the entertainment industry. I eventually want to own my own PR firm.
What are you doing this summer?
Hopefully, I can explore my hobbies a little more. I like to study music, play tennis, swim, explore new beauty brands, and play 3 instruments. I also enjoy going on walks and staying in touch with those closest to me.
