The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. HRSA hires interns for the Public Health Student Intern Program (PHSIP). Public Health Interns work for one semester in one of HRSA's Bureaus or Offices. Internships are unpaid. The program is for current graduate and undergraduate students in good standing. They should be attending schools of public health or public health programs in the United States.
Interns gain professional growth and development as public health practitioners. The program prepares students to support HRSA’s mission in their work, education, or community. Students have frequent contact with HRSA's public health experts. They work in one of many subjects. These include the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, HIV/AIDS Bureau, Maternal and Child Health, Healthcare Systems, and Program Analysis and Evaluation.
Students have the opportunity to participate in training and development activities. These may include:
- HRSA and government office work orientation
- Seminars and webinars available to all HRSA staff
- Exposure to HRSA program analysis and evaluation
- Shadowing HRSA staff in a range of public health topics
Program Objectives
The PHSIP aligns with HRSA's strategic plan. It supports each student's progress toward a public health career. The program:
- Develops the public health workforce.
- Strengthens HRSA's partnership with schools of public health. It also strengthens the pipeline of public health professionals.
- Introduces future public health workers to HRSA's mission, programs, and leadership.
Description of Duties
Specific projects depend on HRSA initiatives when the intern starts. These may include:
- Supporting managing HRSA grants and programs
- Planning and coordinating meetings
- Shadowing and interviewing key HRSA staff
- Applying skills to projects related to the student's curriculum
