What motivated you to pursue higher education?
My family members never had any educational goals. Because they lacked a strong academic foundation, their careers did not pan out as they had envisioned. My family has struggled because they don’t have the educational background to get where they want to be in life. Seeing that has pushed me to take full advantage of my education.
Why is education important for artists?
To become a successful artist, you need to learn the fundamentals of art. I believe that postsecondary education is very important for me to work in the industry. Before attending college, I taught myself how to use charcoal and acrylic paint, but I knew I needed to learn more about using these substances and other available methods. I wanted the experience of working with professors and fellow artists and to be in an environment where I could learn from my peers and allow for artistic critiques. During my two years at El Camino College, I have learned the fundamentals of drawing and how to work with clay, bronze, wax, casting molds, and digital painting. My college experience has empowered me with knowledge so that I can be a successful artist and a successful student.
