The Federal Judicial Center (FJC) is an organization in the federal courts. It manages continuing education and research. Congress established the FJC in 1967. It has a nine-member board. The board is chaired by the Chief Justice of the United States. The board determines the FJC’s policies. The FJC is in the Thurgood Marshall Federal Judiciary Building. This is next to Union Station in Washington, D.C.
The open period is January 28, 2020 - July 27, 2020. The FJC hires interns for the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters:
· Fall Semester dates: September – December; application deadline: mid-July
· Spring Semester dates: January – April; application deadline: mid-October
· Summer Semester dates: May – August; application deadline: mid-April
Education Division
The Education Division creates education programs. They also make materials and resources. Programs are for federal judges. These are appeals, district, bankruptcy, and magistrate judges. Programs are also for federal courts employees. These employees work in clerk of court, probation and pretrial offices. The Division delivers education and resources in a variety of ways. These include in-person programs, virtual conferences, the courts intranet, and publications. There are four teams in the Division. These are Judicial and Legal Education, Executive Education, Management & Professional Development Education, and Probation and Pretrial Services Education.
This internship is for undergraduate students. Students can be full-time and half-time. Interns must be U.S. citizens. Learn more about this internship.
Responsibilities
- Assist with developing surveys. These are for judicial employees and officers.
- Analyze surveys and create reports.
- Analyze and summarize FJC program evaluations.
- Participate in program planning committee meetings.
- Research topics for live web conferences.
- Develop PowerPoint presentations.
- Create handouts and assemble and ship materials.
- Update education programs and learning tools. These include web-based training programs.
- Review newspapers, journals, and related publications. Reviewers look for information about education and training activities.
- Review and summarize educational materials. These include video, audio, and print-based materials. These can be used as training aids in the federal courts. Senior staff purchase such materials for the FJC's Media Library.
- Work with judicial employees and officers.
- Interview people for Court to Court program stories.
- Research topics like legal issues and public leadership. Other topics include federal sentencing and supervising offenders.
- Support technical and office activities.
- Assist with arranging meetings, workshops, and conferences.
Information Technology Office
The Information Technology Office (ITO) works with the other FJC divisions. These divisions are Research, Education, History, and International Relations. ITO has applications development, systems, and technical support teams. Interns mostly work with the program support team. They provide A/V support in conference and meetings room. Responsibilities
- Participate in planning meetings.
- Provide A/V and IT technical support for programs and meetings. This includes being an in-room technician.
- Connect PCs, MACs, tablets, phones and other devices to WiFi and internet.
- Double-check A/V equipment. This can be in the FJC auditorium or conference and training rooms.
- Record sessions.
- Assist with A/V equipment inventory.
- Help staff develop presentations, use applications such as MS Office Suite, and other technology requests.
